UPDATE JULY 08

Just wanted to get an update out to report the progress of the Fishing Island.

LOAD LINE- Needed to operate the vessel

We are nearing the end of plan review ...
.
We can see the finish line !!!We did have a few issues that needed to be addressed and worked through with ABS.  Basically what it comes down to is ABS initially was trying to issue us a un-restricted load line, an un-restricted load line would be a certificate issued to a vessel that would have the option to go anywhere they wish - they could sail around the world if they wanted. Some of our steel plating is not sufficient for that type of service, So what the USCG and ABS have agreed to is to issue us a restricted load line, that way we would have permission to operate with-in a specified area.  Currently we are waiting for the confirmation of this restricted area, we have been discussing a 5 mile off shore limit. This is not a problem as we are moored 3.1 mile... more

The Bar and Grill
Click For Slideshow>>Here is a few pictures of the galley.  We plan to have a casual island style menu catering to locals as well as visitors to the Islands.  We will also be offering a drive up service for any charter or private boats out there that are interested in dining out from our Bar and Grill..The bar is on its way to being completed. Just imagine having a cold beer while viewing the fish catch and the beautiful views of the ocean.   We are in the process of the installation of the bar stools installing components behind the bar and of course we need to decorate!!

We are in Plan Review !!!!
Update For Load Line Certificate and USCG Certification 5/01/08

Load Line Certificate ( required for operation on the mooring)

The following is the items needed to complete the loadline.  We are well on our way!

1. Plan review approval.   We are currently in plan review.  This is estimated to take approx a weeks time. We have already received structural approval on the same plans from the USCG so we are not expecting and delays.

2. Stability Letter From USCG.  In order for the USCG generate the stability letter they need the stability booklet with all the loading calculations for our vessel.  We have just received approval from the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Center for the incline test.  The incline test provides the engineer with the base calculations for the weight and conditions of the vessel.  This is scheduled for May 14th, 2008.This will be witnessed by the USCG an... more

What is the hold up?
1.  Currently we must obtain a load line thru ABS in order to travel from Oahu to Kona and begin operations at a reduced capacity.  (12 pack while obtaining a COI for the vessel)Application for load line was completed in FEB 08’ with ABS(American Bureau Of Shipping).  They are  currently researching their archives for a document (calculation folder).  In the event they locate this document generated in 1969 it will not be necessary to regenerate .  We are currently held up waiting for this process to be complete.  After either location of original calculation folder or new calculation folder completed , the Hokulani O Kona must go into dry dock.  After inspection/survey by ABS and any issues addressed the certificate will be issued.  This must be handed over to the Honolulu sector of the USCG to comply with their regulations for travel and opening as a 12-pack.

2.  We must depl... more

March SlideShow
CLICK ON PIC FOR SLIDE SHOW..
UPDATE....the USCG inspection went well and the vessel was verified to be the same "structure" as the M.V. HIYU in Washington.  This is great news for the project.  Hokulani O Kona is finally on their journey to being certified.  The next step towards certification is the stability tests and reports, following that it will be ship systems and life saving equipt.  This is an exciting time for Fishing Island.

The Loadline still must be completed prior to the departure for Kona, They are waiting for ABS(American Bureau Of Shipping)to complete the loadline analysis, once that is completed the vessel will head over to Kona and begin a smaller version of the project taking only 12 people per shift, 36-48 passengers per day.  This will continue until the certification process is complete.  This is estimated at approx. 6 months or so.....

Making Progress**3-05-08
MARCH 2008- Progress is being made!
WHEN WILL THE HOKULANI O KONA BEGIN OPERATIONS??

**Fishing Island is in the process currently obtaining a load line certificate form ABS. This is a marking on the vessel which marks a safe draft, Hokulani O Kona will be drydocked soon in order to complete this.  Again a huge thanks goes out to Fred @ Marisco again for all that he has done to help out with the project!!

Currently Fishing Island is waiting for ABS to complete their plan reveiw for the load line certificate, this should be in the next 30-45 days.  Once completed then Hokulani O Kona will make the journey to her home in Kaliua Kona !!

Once Hokulani O Kona arrives in Kona they will begin operations as a 12-pack, 12 passengers per shift, with 3-4 shifts per day this will be approx 36-48 fisherman/passengers per day....

So keep watching for this project to come to life it wont be long Now!!

We found a Sistership!
CLICK ON PIC FOR SLIDESHOW--While researching other vessels to strenthen Fishing Islands position with the USCG for the certification, Tanya stumbled across this vessel in Washington State its a ferry built by a different builder but designed by the same designer.  Hokulani O KOna was designed after this vessel.  It is the M.V. HIYU and is on a nationwide commercial for the Washington State Ferry System.  Fishing Island Inc has been in contact with the Washington State Ferry System and they have released all plans on their vessel in order to help out Fishing Island.  We would like to say ALOHA to Washington State Ferry Systems and invite them out to the project as they have been so kind and have went out of their to research their own plans so that they may provide them for us.  The HIYU is the same vessel as Hokulani O Kona and will help tremendously with the Certification process as the HIYU is currently certified for 200 passengers! ... more

Dec 07
CLICK ON PIC FOR SLIDESHOW--This Month was hectic to say the least.  Oahu had a terrible storm on Dec 5th, the boat was surging, with 50 mile an hour winds and large swells.  It was a few sleepless night for everyone.  We were able to provide shelter for a white owl that was caught up in the storm.  Christmas on the boat was really unique and great.  Ray and Terry went to Sacramento to spend Christmas with the family there and Chuck and Tanya and the kids stayed on the boat.  Kahea flew in from Kona and moved to the boat to get the bar and grill designed and completed.  She is working on the many systems to put in place before we open and the menu looks ONO! Both the captains quarters and the crew quarters were finished this month.  Most of the remaining furniture and misc item left on the boat were removed.  Fishing Island closed escrow on the shuttle boat.  Ray and Terry flew to Kona a... more

The time Tracy and Sean have put in has been truely appreciated and nothing short of amazing!  The life saving equiptment came in and they started on the two sides above the deck crews and captains quarters.  One side for Ray and Terry and One side for Chuck, Tanya and the kids.  Brandon,Chuck and Tanyas son and Kahea have their rooms on the top deck. This month was very exciting as you could really begin to see the Hokulani O Kona take shape into their vision.  Thanksgiving was a little different this year not much different than any other day Ray and Chuck worked most of the day and Chuck deep fried his famous Turkey recipe o... more
